23. Bob Dylan--Blood On The Tracks

Year: 1975
Producer: Bob Dylan
Personnel:
  • Bob Dylan – Vocals, Guitars, Harmonica, Organ, Mandolin
  • and various session musicians

Raspy, bluesy and folky are perhaps 3 of the words most used to describe Bob Dylan, and right from the start of "Tangled Up In Blue," the first track on his album Blood on the Tracks, all 3 prove to be apt descriptors of the music within. At times the music is Beatles-esque in some ways (although with considerably different styles of vocalization), while "You're A Big Girl Now" recalls some of the lush sounds from The Velvet Underground and Nico. Of course, the harmonica playing is the best out there this side of a Blues Traveler album or Billy Joel's "Piano Man." "Meet Me In The Morning" shows how effective a simple 12-bar blues structure can be in the hands of a talented songwriter and musician like Dylan, a perfect case of form following function as he tries to write a deliberate, easygoing blues track.

Overall: though far be it from me to judge Bob Dylan, I liked this record, but it wasn't an absolute favorite of mine out of the book. 3/5 stars
